What is Lent?
Lent is a period of time (40 days and 40 nights) where a Christian chooses to give something up in remembrance of when Jesus spent 40 days and nights fasting in the desert whilst being tempted by the devil. Lent starts on Ash Wednesday (5/3/14), and finishes at Easter, when Christians remember the execution of Jesus, and his resurrection. However, during this 40 day/night period, Sunday's are not included as Sunday's commemorate the resurrection.
For a few years I have given something up for Lent, such as chocolate, crisps and meat. So this year I plan on giving up fizzy drinks as they are unnecessary and really don't do you any good for you. Now, as well as giving up something I have decided to also take up something which will help my health, and make me a stronger person. This thing is running! I used to run often, however since an injury in the early part of 2013, I haven't been able to run properly since, and now I've decided this will be a good time to start again. I'm not going to force myself to run everyday as that isn't good, and will probably give me more injuries. Instead I will just set myself a small goal of running three times per week for the next 40 days. If I feel I could do more then I will, but I'm not going to push myself.
Will you be giving anything up for Lent? Even if you aren't religious, it's still a good reason to give up something that you perhaps over indulge on or even take up something new that you used to do or have never done before.
