Throwing it right back to over 10 years ago! In primary school I took part in cross country running. It consisted of practicing every Thursday lunch time around the school playground, all in preparation for two races in the year, one in March and the other in November.
I remember my ever first race, didn't have a clue what to expect but I did so well. The race every time included around 400 girls of my age, all running for the finish line. I will never forget the time the horn sounded to start the race, where a swarm of girls would run as fast as they could in order to get a good position for the rest of the race. I was lucky to always get out pretty quickly and be ahead of many and just run the race comfortably. In all my cross country races over four years, I always finished within the first 100 girls. My lowest was 22nd, which I couldn't be more proud of (does that make any sense?!). I also remember coming 94th in one race, 63rd in another. It was at one of these races where I was invited to attend my local athletics club to train with them. I believe it was through cross country where my love and talent of running developed.
Sadly over the last two years due to an injury, my running just hasn't been there. I've attempted it a few times but I'm always so uncomfortable and not feeling it. However, I am going to try and stick with it, persevere through all the pain and I will get back to running like I used to. With this in mind, I am going to set a goal for next year, which is to take part in a Tough Mudder race, and a goal for 2016 (yes this sure is planning early!) is to run a marathon. I really really want to get back to running and for it to have a purpose, so here's to running regularly.
Why don't you join me with this running goal, it doesn't have to be the same race, but set yourself a challenge or race in mind and work towards it. Small steps can lead to big things, so start today and just keep going.
M.
